"So, let us not be blind to our differences - - but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."
JFKennedy at American University's Spring Commencement on June 10, 1963.
This Kennedy speech is a milestone, not only because of its political message of peace, but because of the humanity it expresses. It contributed a great deal to the Kennedy legend. We know he was just a man, with flaws like everyone else, but this speech gave him a whole different dimension. We should all read it and think about how universal the message is, how it still applies to the world today, how little things have changed since then in human relations and wonder WHY?
