Once upon a time, not long ago...

Jodeci, Dru Hill, Blackstreet, Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, Bobby Brown, Boyz II Men, Next, H Town, Silk, Jagged Edge, Shai... If you don't know half the names on this list (and it could go on and on and on...), this means you're too young; it means you are unable to understand why I have such a hard time listening to R&B today. Any of these guys/ groups had exactly what nowadays bands lack: charisma, attitude, writing skills, incredible voices, in one word, TALENT!

Apart from some rare exceptions, today's R&B is filled with fake ass wannabe posers with not so bad voices but no feeling whatsoever! What contemporary urban singer would have the balls and the talent to sing a classic such as "If You Think You're Lonely Now" (Bobby Womack) and still make you shiver, just like K Ci Hailey did? What new generation cat can still write a hot song without the words "shine", "swagger", "bling" or "bitch"? I mean, these guys, despite their sudden disappearence from the music business, made a lasting impression on many generations, just like Marvin Gaye or Donnie Hathaway before them. Who do you think will remenber about Omarion, Chris Brown and other dollar earning 20 years old one hit wonders 10 years from now? Even one hit wonders back in the day had real HITS! And don't even get me started on Hip Hop! A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Pete Rock, The Pharcyde, Lords Of The Underground, Naughty By Nature... Real beats, rhymes from the heart, crazy and witty wordplay you'd like to find in some of nowadays artists... FUCK IT, MAN, I REALLY MISS THE 90's!!!
